    TECHNICAL WARM UP FOOTBALL

This technical warm up football session has been donated by qualified Football Coach Matthew Kirckwood, from elite academy soccer coaching. We thank Matthew and recommend his coaching and website.

Technical Warm Up - Aged 7+

    Difficulty - Comfortable

The technical warm up Football is based on developing first touch, as well as getting the muscles and brain ready for the game or training session. I'd recommend doing this especially with younger children to develop the technical ability when passing and receiving!

    Session Requirements

    - 20 x 20 grid
    - Cones
    - 3 sets of coloured bibs
    - A minimum of 8 players, but works better with 14 +
    - Bag of footballs (enough for each player)

    Information

    - Separate the group into 3 groups

    - Depending on numbers, I have gone with an even number, therefore 5 Red, 5 Blue and 4 Yellow.

    - Coach blows his whistle, and both the Red and Blue team move around the 20 x 20 with the ball at there feet.

    - The Yellow team are playing off two touches, receiving the pass of either colour, first touch control, then playing back.

    - Once they have passed, they go looking for the second pass.

    - If no Yellow player is free, then other players must work on skills, turns, movement, keep up's in order to become comfortable with the ball

    - Explain the importance of game-like movements

    - Swap the groups over after 3 minutes.

    - Progress onto Yellow team can only play off one touch.

    Coaching Points

    - Get plenty touches of the ball

    - Don't be scared of trying things

    - See the ball, see the rest of the other players

    - Don't move at the same pace

    - Don't move in the same direction

    - Practice game-like movements i.e. jinks inside if they play wide

    - Keep the ball moving

    - Always know what's around you

    Progressions

    - As mentioned above, Yellow team can only play back off one touch

    - Increase more players in the middle

    - Make it competitive - First player to make 10 passes

    - Change it so the Yellow must then receive a one two before he moves on i.e. one touch, one two then the usual two touch.
