The Thomas Bennett Community College Academy Programme is a full-time course for 16-19yr old students which incorporate both full-time football training with post-16 education.
Thomas Bennett Community College is working with Chelsea FC Foundation to provide anopportunity for students to develop their football ability in a professional style football environment. The programme aims to fulfil students playing potential whilst meeting their educational needs by undertaking 6th Form qualifications in sports, coaching and other subjects.

On The Pitch
Students will be part of a full time training programme which will cover technical, tactical and physical elements of football to an elite level, helping develop both their ability and understanding of the game. Teams will compete in U19’s leagues to help them transfer their learning into real game scenarios.
UEFA ‘A qualified coaches will work with players to coach and manage all squad members in sessions and in a competitive league with both development and success on the agenda. Differing systems of play, opposition analysis and individual player feedback will all create an environment designed to mature not only the player’s ability but their mental and social approach to the game.
Fitness sessions and a regular testing programme will help players make the difficult progression from junior to senior football. Consistent strength, power, speed and endurance development sessions aid individuals and give our squad a ‘cutting edge’ in the competitive arena.
Chelsea FC Foundation kit will be worn by students at all times, a fee of £200 for the kit will be required from the student to cover this.
Off The Pitch
Students will have a range of courses to select from studying either BTEC or NVQ qualifications based on academic ability and GCSE results. Studying Sports Development, Coaching and Fitness as an integral part their provision. Theoretical understanding of anatomy, physiology, sociology and culture will be taught to back up their day to day football lives. The emphasis will be on practical lessons wherever possible to fit in with learners strengths.
Those with appropriate results from Yr 11 will have the opportunity to study A’Level courses from our wide range of courses. Individuals will manage their own timetable to enable them to study more traditional academic courses as well as train on a full time basis. All academic work will be delivered by academy staff in the School environment to allow continuity between football and academic studying. Large emphasis will be placed on professional standards and behaviour being maintained at all times. Simple procedures will be used to ensure players act to these expectations during all of their time at the college.
The programme also includes the students taking their FA Level 1 Award in Coaching Football. They may have
opportunities to work as an assistant with qualified and experienced coaches from Chelsea FC Foundation in the community to aid further options to play and coach in future life*.
Exit Routes
All players will be encouraged to continue with their football outside of college to mutually benefit from the academy. Links with local senior football clubs will be used to give high achievers greater experience at youth and adult levels.
The combination of football and academic studies will give students a superb opportunity to apply for Football specific courses at University. We currently have strong relationships with a number of universities to aid those who have aspirations to study football to degree level.
USA Scholarship applications will also be supported as a potential route for players who show high levels of ability.
Coaching
All Students will be given work experience placements with the Chelsea FC Foundation as part of their working week*. This will give them a great opportunity to work with and learn from qualified and experienced members of staff to aid them with their development and create a pathway to a potential career in the coaching industry. Students interested in coaching with have the opportunity to take up part-time or potentially full time roles within Chelsea FC Foundation. Apprenticeships in coaching will also be available.
* All opportunities of working with CFCF as a volunteer or coach are dependent on a clear DBS disclosure
Nathan Evans
Nathan went through the NVQ Coaching Developing Programme working extensively with the Chelsea FC Foundation whilst at Thomas Bennett. He continued his employment when he completed the course and has now go on to a permanent member of the coaching staff responsible for organising coaching sessions across West Sussex. His role now involves delivering to sports leaders, working with young adults in an Emotional and Behavioural Disorder School and working as a head coach at one of the club’s Development Centres.
Academy Trials
Trials will be held as part of the application process for the academy. Information regarding our first trial will appear here in the near future.
